In 2020, Canadian Government spending will be almost 60% of GDP (IMF) yet there has been zero focus in reducing this biggest, most inefficient part of the economy.
With the "planet on the brink", Governments both Federally and Provincially are setting spending records causing our pollution levels to be well below targets. Reducing the 60% is an easy solution and we should go beyond eliminating commuting bureaucrats.
Government workers have no incentive to reduce emissions – turning up the heat, for example, will never effect their pay! Individuals working in private business know these savings provide more money available for employee pay increases and bonuses.
Government monopolies have no competition thus they have one goal – maximize the pay of employees (and keep the monopoly!). There is no reinforcement to, say, plan an efficient route when inspecting as overtime might be lost. Deficits will simply be incurred to cover the additional cost like a Carbon Tax.
Even when there is some competition with private sector, government is horribly inefficient in comparison ( ex). By eliminating the government component, services can be delivered with less planet killing pollution.
Reducing Government spending will also enable individuals to target their savings into desired investments. At present, a Government worker has no control over Pension Fund investments – often invested in carbon production in the small half of the economy. If these workers could be moved into the private sector, they could ensure their savings are green as they can be self directed.
Reducing Government could also allow for tax reduction – which would allow private businesses greater capacity to invest in pollution fighting technologies they invent.
Clearly, to save the planet we must start reducing the largest and most inefficient part of the economy – Government spending. A great bonus for future, smaller generations will be less Fiscal Child Abuse – debt and pension obligations to carry.
